Yesterday Pastor Robert Jeffress said that impeaching President Trump would be akin to setting off a civil war in the country. The comment is seen below:
“And I do want to make this prediction this morning: If the Democrats are successful in removing the president from office, I’m afraid it will cause a Civil War-like fracture in this nation from which this country will never heal,”
President Trump then tweeted the comment out. Both are wrong and the language used in this comment is unsettling at the very least. It suggests that we might move into an armed conflict. According to Jeffress the only impeachable act President Trump has committed is having the gall to defeat Hillary Clinton in 2016.
I will be right up front and acknowledge that in my opinion the Democrats have never gotten over the loss in that election and have been hell bent on removing Trump from office even before he was sworn in as President. We went through two years of investigating Russian interference in the election and the result by the Mueller team was that they could find no collusion. Democrats had believed that Mueller would give them the smoking gun and were outraged when he did not. They then pounced on the theory that Trump had obstructed the investigation by threatening to remove Mueller. He did not so that threw cold water on the obstruction claim.
Now we have the Ukrainian investigation and that has given Speaker Pelosi the incentive to move forward with an impeachment inquiry. I am not exactly sure what that means. Under the rules if you want to impeach the President you bring Articles of Impeachment to the floor of the House and all 435 members of the House can then debate the evidence and vote on whether to impeach or not. That could probably be done in about two days. But what the Democrats really want to do is drag this out and hold as many hearings as they can and keep this in the news cycle and give Don Lemon (CNN) and Rachel Maddow (MSNBC) as many talking points as possible. In the end they will either have to move to the floor or not.
It is a fool’s errand because then you have to have a trial in the Senate, and it requires 67 votes to convict. Former Senator Jeff Flake has gone on the record saying there are at least 35 Republican Senators who will vote for impeachment and that goes down as another “Flaky” statement that he is known to make. Remember, this is a guy who declined to run for reelection because every poll in Arizona showed him losing in both the primary and general election. If and when we get to a vote in the Senate and Trump is not convicted I would hope that everyone would realize that Flake’s comment were nothing more than what he normally does and that is find some way to make himself appear relevant when in fact he is not.
But returning to the comments of Jeffress I can only say that he is so far to the right that even normal conservatives view him as a nut job. This is a guy who at the opening of the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem said the Jews, Muslims and Mormons are all going to hell. Talk about bigotry. He not only takes the cake, but he ate the entire cake. We are a nation built on the principle of religious freedom, but Pastor Jeffress does not see it that way. So when he makes controversial comments about a civil war he is very close to inciting violence and President Trump should know better than to repeat them.
