Democrats running for office are once again coming up with proposals that can only be described as “buying votes.” This week Bernie Sanders unveiled a proposal where unpaid medical bills will be assumed by the Federal government and they will attempt to negotiate a payment to the provider or insurance company. At what point does the voting public realize that these things are not free and that someone has to pay for them and eventually it will be themselves and their children. It brings to mind the famous quote:
“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the majority discovers it can vote itself largess out of the public treasury. After that, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits with the result the democracy collapses because of the loose fiscal policy ensuing, always to be followed by a dictatorship, then a monarchy.”
This quote has been attributed to many different authors, but the fact remains is that it rings true on all fronts. There will always be more people with less than those that have more. This happens in any society and yet Democrats seem to think that they can just take from someone else to give to those they want to buy votes with and that everything will be fine. And this is just another in a long list of voting buying schemes that Democrats had been offering to voters. Medicare for all is one of them, erasing student loan debt is another and
This is starting to remind me of the economic disaster of 2007-08. That was precipitated by Congress passing the Community Development Act that basically adopted a policy that everyone can and should own a home. This resulted in money being loaned to anyone that applied for a mortgage without regard to their ability to repay the loan. Banks were told that they would be penalized if they did not offer lower income people loans and so they played along. Nobody had to document their income or ability to pay, they just had to say that they were good for the money. In the end millions were not able to continue paying the mortgage bills and the housing market collapsed. The banks were complicit in this failure because they started packaging mortgage loans into what are known as Collateralized Debt Obligations (CDO). When the mortgages started failing the CDOs started failing and we had the double whammy of people losing homes and investments going south. Suddenly we are headed into a recession. You would think the politicians of today would realize this but the move towards socialism by so many Democrat candidates is forcing them to see which one can outdo the others in offering free stuff in exchange for votes.
When asked on how they will pay for these programs they are vague. We already have a national debt of $23 Trillion and it keeps rising. Trump seems to ignore the deficit and Republicans that used to try and control spending seem to have given up and joined the spending barrage. Sanders says this latest proposal will be paid for by some tax on corporate executives. Not sure how that would even be implemented. Maybe he should suggest that professional athletes be taxed on their huge salaries but then that might be called racist since so many of them are minorities. Elizabeth Warren had dodged the question of how to pay for her programs and when directly asked if this would mean a tax increase to the middle class, she effectively tries to change the subject or deflect the question with some other form of obfuscation. Joe Biden, the moderate in the race for the nomination, has been forced to move left and adopt some of the outlandish proposals as he tries to hang on to his polling lead. The poll out of Iowa this weekend showed him falling behind Elizabeth Warren so you can expect Joe to try and move further left to stay alive.
One problem for Joe Biden is the Ukraine issue. An unnamed whistleblower reported that President Trump discussed with the President of the Ukraine that he might consider investigating the deals Biden’s son was making in the Ukraine. Immediately the media pounced on this as something unethical and demanded the transcripts of the call. In typical Trump fashion he denied anything at first but then was forced to admit that the topic came up. To most Americans this was something new, but the Hillary Clinton campaign brought it up in the last election in an effort to keep Biden out of the race. Hunter Biden had been a member of the board of Burisma Holdings, a Ukrainian natural gas company. He was compensated, hold on to your hat, at a rate of $50,000 per month. It was not until his father entered the Presidential race that he left the board. That is a lot of dollars in between. Five years at about $600K per year. Biden and his son said there was nothing wrong with the arrangement, but any reasonable person would realize that if his name was not Biden and his father was not the Vice President of the United States it is very doubtful, he would have been placed on the board.
Another factor in this is the media. Already under fire for their incompetent handling of the Kavanaugh story they later had to reveal that the whistleblower did not have any first-hand knowledge of the Trump phone call and was only saying what someone else said to him. Pretty shoddy reporting for not revealing that right up front.
This is just one more problem for Joe Biden and I suspect he will be falling out of the race by February. He was never liberal enough for the progressives of the party and by flipping positions he was hurting himself with the few moderates left in the Democrat party and the Independents.
Liberals Love Free Speech, Not!
The next time I hear some liberal talk about free speech I am going to start laughing. Over and over there are examples of how liberals in this country view free speech as only applicable if you agree with their mindset. The latest example was this week. Former Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen was scheduled to be part of a three-day festival being hosted by the magazine The Atlantic. It was supposed to be an exchange of ideas on various subjects. But liberal groups went ballistic that a former Trump official was going to be allowed to participate and immediately several staffers at the magazine began to protest the inclusion of Secretary Nielsen. Eventually Secretary Nielsen just removed herself from the program.
Can you imagine if protestors at any level forced a member of the Obama or Clinton administration to withdraw from speaking at an event? The screaming and yelling would reach a crescendo. But this is what you have to expect since this type of activity takes place on campuses and other places in society every day.
