This week the House was embroiled in the controversy over Cong. Omar and her blatantly anti-Semitic statements. It was so bad that a resolution was drafted condemning anti-Semitism and was designed to show that Democrats are not anti-Israel or anti-Semitic. But that would mean taking on one of the freshman firebrands that have dominated the media in this new Congress. Immediately the supporters of Cong. Omar went to work and managed to water down the resolution to be a condemnation of any kind of hatred and basically sounded like something we have all been taught since grade school. That we should try and be nice to everyone.
But on Omar’s comments specifically, there was to be no mention of calling out a member of Congress for supporting Israel. Forget that Israel is our strongest ally in the middle east and there is a strong bond between our nation and Israel. She strongly suggested that American Jews were more loyal to Israel than the United States. But she misses the point entirely. Israel was created as a homeland for Jews in the aftermath of World War II and the Holocaust. Over six million Jews were slaughtered by the Nazi government of Germany. Naturally, there is a great affinity by all Jews for the state of Israel.
Israel has been under attack from Arabs and Muslims since it was formed. Israel, over the years, has offered to come to the table and strike an agreement with its enemies. But that is difficult to do when their mantra has been to destroy Israel. Israel is not without fault. They have allowed Jewish settlers in the West Bank. This is a major point of contention to Palestinians. But until the Arab and Muslim states in the Middle East agree that Israel must remain as a nation and a homeland for Jews no peace agreement will ever be reached.
So, with a watered-down resolution Cong. Omar decided to claim victory and put out a statement that for the first time the House had voted to denounce anti-Muslim actions. Speaker Pelosi, unable to muster the votes for the original resolution, caved in and then in a statement suggested that Cong. Omar was naïve and did not really understand the hurt some of her comments would make with a lot of people.
With that behind her, you would think that Cong. Omar would try to shun the glaring light of controversy and avoid making any statements that might upset her colleagues. But she sensed she was flush with victory in an interview with Politico, a Washington newspaper that covers Capitol Hill and politics, she took on former President Barrack Obama. She compared him to President Donald Trump and said that he was just a bit “more polished.” His hope and change motto was just smoke and mirrors. She cited his policies towards illegal immigration, particularly detaining children, and then brought up the fact that he had authorized the use of lethal drone strikes overseas.
I want you to think about that for a moment. President Obama authorized drone strikes against ISIS and Jihadists that were hell-bent on killing anyone that would not swear fealty to their Caliphate and especially at killing American troops in the region. It is obvious that she objects to the use of American power against any Muslim that might call for the downfall of the very nation where she serves in the corridors of political power. How dare the President of the United States, the Commander in Chief of our military, authorize and use military weapons to defeat an enemy. This woman is devoid of any real intelligence and seems determined to undermine U.S. foreign policy if it differs from her view of the world, particularly when it comes to Muslims.
I have in the past asked where is her condemnation of Islamic terrorism? Where is her outrage at the way women are treated like chattel by her fellow Muslim brothers? I am not a supporter of Hoda Muthana but even she has said that she was brainwashed and the brutality she saw while living with ISIS was extreme. She is willing to condemn it because she wants to get back into the United States.
When you look at what these new Freshman Democrats are doing within the Democrat Caucus in the House you have to wonder who is in charge. The Democrats did not regain the House because of the likes of Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Talib. It is not from the hard-left progressives that come from solidly Democrat districts. That majority was accomplished by the moderate Democrats that won seats in swing suburban districts around the country. The antics of these hard-left progressives put those seats back into play for Republicans and I suspect Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer realize this, but they seem powerless to keep these progressives in check. For years Nancy Pelosi has been poster face that Republicans ran against but that is now changing. In the next Congressional races in 2020, those moderates will have to distance themselves from the likes of Ilhan Omar and that may prove to be a dangerous tactic. Already we have seen Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez threaten any Democrat that does not toe her line of thinking.
As a moderate Republican, I encourage them to keep speaking out. Every time they become the news of the say Republicans, Independents and moderate Democrats have to wonder where this new majority in the House is taking them and rethink how they will vote.
And if that is not enough to enrage any moderate voter the House today voted on H.R. 1 which is a wide-ranging bill on election reform. Republicans offered an amendment that said “allowing illegal immigrants the right to vote devalues the franchise and diminishes the voting power of United States citizens.” The amendment was defeated with all but six Democrats voting against it. Federal law already prohibits non-citizens from voting in federal elections but there is a growing movement among Democrats to allow non-citizens, including illegal immigrants, to vote in local elections. You can be sure that their long-term intent is to allow non-citizens to vote in any election.
