I have not had much time this week but a lot has been going on so there are several subjects I would like to write about.
The Senate became bogged down in trying to craft a health care bill that would gain the necessary votes from conservatives and moderates in the party. They are further hamstrung by having to pass the bill under the rules of reconciliation since not a single Democrat will lend a vote to replace a failing ObamaCare system. The CBO came out with a report that said 22 million people would lose heath care under the new bill. The Democrats and the liberal media immediately seized on this and started saying passage of this bill will cause people to die. Now if you took the time to read the CBO report, which I did, you will find that those numbers are not what the Democrats and media are saying. Of the 22 million who might lose health insurance 15 million (almost 75%) of that number will be people who will choose not to purchase health insurance. The Senate bill repeals the penalties for not buying health care and a lot of people will simply make a personal choice not to buy. This is an estimate by CBO and their estimates have not always been accurate. When projecting ObamaCare they were off by 30% in the number of people that would enroll (they thought more would enroll) and they missed the Medicaid enrollment number by 14% (more enrolled).
Another point in the CBO report that is ignored by liberals and the media is the effect the new legislation would have on the Federal deficit. It would reduce it by some significant numbers. Liberals ignore the deficit because they would rather spend tax dollars now to buy votes than worry about the long term effect on my grandchildren when it comes time to pay that debt.
So we have demonstrations all over the country and when someone tries to ask these intellectual giants about anything specific in the bill they get blank looks. All they know is what the media and their liberal politicians have told them it says. Remember, this is the same group who adhered to the famous quote “We have to read this bill to find out what is in it.”
Media Fight With Trump
There is no doubt that President Trump holds the liberal media in contempt and they return that feeling by expressing their contempt for him. If I were counseling him I would tell him to ignore them because eventually the public will tire of their negativity. I would counsel him on being more Presidential and less confrontational. Since I am not giving him counsel I do not expect him to change in the near term.
The biggest flap this week has been with MSNBC hosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough. They have been relentless attacking the President with a full barrage of insults which went from political to very personal. Trump fired back (I wish he would ignore them) and they were suddenly hurt and could not understand why the President was attacking them. Mika Brzezinski took the fight to an even more personal level with an interview with “InStyle” where she stated:
“I know Melania. I haven’t talked to her in months, but if my gut is right, I don’t think she’s going to put up with it much longer. I know nothing. That’s just my instinct and I go with my gut and my gut’s always right. I’m just telling you, Melania’s got the worst job in the country and I don’t think she wants do it a lot longer. I think she will do it for as long as she has to for her son, and that’s it.”
With this statement she suggested that the First Lady would turn on her husband and eventually leave him. Imagine if something like that had been said about President and First Lady Obama.
Of course the First Lady’s office came back with a statement that the First Lady knows her husband and if he is attacked he will attack back harder.
The media and liberals, with Republicans joining in condemned the President for his harsh comments directed at Mika Brzezinski and while I would again tell him to ignore them I wonder where the outrage is at the very personal attacks leveled at the President and his family. These are the very same liberals and media who decried personal attacks on President Obama.
Anyone that thinks the media has been fair to Trump has not watched much TV or read a newspaper. I realize they are decidedly liberal but they have gone way overboard in their attacks on the President. I suspect that a lot of its still resides with the fact they did not expect Trump to win and cannot accept that he defeated Hillary Clinton.
The Supreme Court finally took up the Administration’s travel ban on six countries and as I predicted they would support the President’s right to impose restrictions on immigration. This is because the law is very clear on this subject. The Federal judges in the lower courts that were stopping the ban were all appointed by Democrats and they were engaging in judicial activism as opposed to judicial responsibility. The Court allowed the ban to go into effect with some restrictions that allowed anyone that could prove a bona fide direct family or business connection to the United States could apply for a visa. Immediately the Democrat Attorney General in Hawaii challenged part of the ban and sought to have another liberal judge uphold him. I suspect some of these lower court judges will be loathe to try and fly in the face of the Supreme Court ruling, which by the way was unanimous.
What these judges were doing should scare every American. They were taking statements made by a candidate for office and using them to base their decision on a legal case. In the next round of fights in future years most of the judges will have been appointed by Trump and liberals would be rightfully outraged if those judges allowed their personal feelings and politics to interfere with their judicial responsibility. Judges should be deciding cases based on the law and not some comments by a candidate or their personal political beliefs. None of the stays on the travel ban were based on law but more on politics.
The real truth about this travel ban is that it was temporary. It was projected to last 90 days (would have expired absent judicial interference) and the six countries named are all nations that do not have a stable government that can fully vet visa applications. Government records are pretty much non-existent in these nations that have been ravaged by war or controlled by terrorists who are adverse to the interests of the United States. The ban simply stated that it would be temporary and be done to allow the government to ensure that those applying to enter the United States were not someone we did not want coming in.
